"Water is life and clean water means health."
-Audrey Hepburn
Today I am still hiking through the concept of mindful eating. However, I got a little distracted by water and hydration. The last few days I have woke up to a headache and some brain fog. I am going to directly link this to water consumption as one of the signs of mild dehydration are the two symptoms mentioned above. I find it sort of silly that I don't drink more. I actually love water! I am one of those people that will exhale a breath of joy when I take a sip of cool water. It made me think back to my trip last year to Iceland. We were going to a country some of the cleanest water in the world! The water there seemed like an unlimited natural resource. Storekeepers would raise an eyebrow when you brought a bottle of water to purchase to the counter. Most small restaurants had water available on a cupboard in a carafe poured directly from the tap. That's how amazing the water is. You could drink it from the tap! And Icelandic people are healthy. The ice I am holding in the picture above is ice taken from an actual iceberg that took 1,000 years to travel from the top of a glacier. That just blows my mind. This island of approx. 400,000 inhabitants have worked to make sure that their water, which I might add we need for survival, is clean. Now here's where the terrain gets a little rocky in today's side trip. Clean water is not something that is guaranteed to everyone. We still have cities in America that can't deliver clean water to their residents. There is no way that some would even consider drinking the water from their taps. Here's where the trail ends for me because I can't wrap my brain around women walking miles and miles for a clean source of water each day. Without water, we can not survive. Without clean water, we diminish our health greatly. Like mindful eating, I feel that being mindful of how we are hydrating our bodies is important as well. Some of which we can derive from what we eat. However, pure water, the one from the glacier ice, is amazing. Refreshing, life-giving, crisp, and satisfying. I am starting to see how what we put in our body truly does nurture us.
