"I'll eat some breakfast, then save the world."
-Hairspray
If I had to rate which meal I feel most disconnected from, breakfast might have to dust itself off and step into the light. Breakfast is one of those meals that many avoid. How many of us pull ourselves out of bed, feet to the floor, and rush to join the hustle and bustle of our lives. We begin our day depriving ourselves of the fuel that will help us to achieve optimal results. The word breakfast should give us a clue. Break + Fast = Breaking the fast you began the night before when you went to sleep. When working, I find it even more difficult to take in a nourishing meal. Planning meals and keeping clean foods available to grab can often seem overwhelming. The fact that I don't have any suggestions on how to make it all work is a little frustrating for me. However, this is what I do know. Breakfast has to happen. I need to take a moment each morning to break the fast I began the night before. It is imperative to honor my body and mind by providing it with the nourishing fuel that will help me gain greater success and fulfilment each day.
Since my journey began (Saturday...we haven't gotten very deep yet), I have taken time each morning to eat something. Saturday morning I had the most delicious bowl of oatmeal. I took time to boil the water, cook the oats, cut the banana, hunt down the pecans, sprinkle the cinnamon, and drizzle the honey. It was truly a sensory experience. The visual of the oatmeal combined with the taste was incredibly satisfying. Maybe this whole mindful eating thing is metaphorical to life. Maybe taking time to experience life through my senses will yield a more pleasant experience.
